We're a week away from when candidates for office can begin circulating petitions to get on the ballot. If you have a preferred candidate, you might consider volunteering as a petition circulator for them. If you don't, prepare to be asked to sign. Remember, you can only sign as many petitions as there are open seats for a particular office. (For example, there are 10 City Council district seats, and 7 at-large seats, so you can sign only one petition for your district candidate but up to 7 petitions for at-large candidates.)

Thanks to everyone who made it out to last Sunday's range outing with Shooting Liberally Philly. We'll be doing it again in March.

Local Programming: Philly Restaurant Week(s) Tops List of Things Not to Do

Center City Philly Restaurant Week (really, 2 weeks) is September 12-17 and 19-24. Make plans to visit any of the 100+ restuarants participating this year if you enjoy the idea of a fine dining/McDonalds hybrid or if you find it amusing to watch servers dying inside as they struggle to please a screaming horde of diners who are all there because it's cheap.

Like Philly Beer Week(s), this event is a marketing vehicle that has ballooned into something worse than useless. What started as a good idea - serve a prix fixe menu of slightly smaller portions so that a wider audience can try a restaurant - has become something that people do because it's what a lot of other people do. Customers who appreciate good food can't enjoy it and don't get their money's worth, even at lower prices. Workers get screwed because every shift is like a double without commensurate tips. Maybe the restaurant owners see a bump in profits, or maybe these events persist because Philly has become "known" for them, and once we're known for a plausibly positive event (as opposed to, say, our murder rate or flash mobs) then we're stuck with it forever.

Anyway, my advice: Avoid.

We're asking all of the regulars to invite at least one new person to come out on Tuesday nights. Word of mouth is the best way to build anything, so please help us out! Also, we've run ads for Drinking Liberally on the back page of the City Paper. Those are being funded by donations from generous DL members. We'll see if they have any result before trying it again.

In early April, members of Shooting Liberally Philly road-tripped to Kentucky to attend the biannual Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot right outside Ft. Knox. We really had a lot of fun talking to the collectors of automatic weapons, some modern, some dating back to World War I and earlier. We have video of members trying out some of the guns. Local Programming: Support These Philly Beer Bars

Pennsylvania's autocratic liquor laws in action:

Based on a complaint from someone the State Police refuse to identify, three teams of officers converged last Thursday on the three bars, run by Leigh Maida and her husband, Brendan Hartranft. Checking their inventories against the state's official list of more than 2,800 brands, the cops seized four kegs and 317 bottles, totaling 60.9 gallons of beer, according to police calculations.

First, the state requires beer sellers to register their offerings by name by paying a $75 fee. There is nothing done to justify the registration; it only exists to raise revenue.

Second, more than half the beer seized by the State Police were actually on the approved list, but clerical errors and laziness on the part of the authorities meant is was confiscated anyway.

Third, the beers confiscated are sold all over town, and all over the state, but a complaint by an anonymous individual  (read: well-connected competitor) resulted in this couple's three great bars being raided.

My response was to run right out and have dinner at Resurrection Ale House. I recommend you pick one of the three places and give them your business:

Resurrection Ale House, at 2425 Grays Ferry Ave.; Local 44, at 44th and Spruce streets, in West Philadelphia; and Memphis Taproom, 2331 E. Cumberland St., Port Richmond.

Each of the city’s 1,684 voting divisions is represented by up to two Democratic and two Republican committee people. They register voters,"get out the vote," give rides to the polls, elect the ward leaders and work year-round on community issues.

Join the Committee of Seventy on Thursday, February 11th at 6:00 pm for a free "How to Run for Committee Person” candidate training at their office located at Eight Penn Center, 1628 JFK Boulevard, Suite 1002, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Please join Education Voters of Pennsylvania with special guests Governor Ed Rendell and Congressman Chaka Fattah. Education Voters of Pennsylvania has had a very busy year! This summer alone we contacted over 180,000 voters throughout the state to help push for a responsible budget that keeps the promises made to our children and continues the progress we've made with public education. With the help and support of people like you, Governor Rendell and the General Assembly passed a budget that honors and improves upon the school funding formula adopted last year, and provides a $300 million increase in the basic education subsidy for school districts! While this is an incredibly significant accomplishment, we know we will be in for just as difficult a fight next year as the economy continues to struggle. Since our inception we have built a list of over 3,000 activists, but we need to continue this momentum if we want to build upon the gains we have made. Come out to support Education Voters of Pennsylvania and this very important cause, and enjoy some food, drink, and friends in the process. Philly for Change is the place to meet new and old activists and citizens in Philadelphia who want to make progressive change. Our regular monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM. On the agenda in January: The PFC Governor endorsement vote by PFC members, the U.S. Senate campaign discussion, and updates on Philadelphia libraries , the Marcellus Shale gas extraction fight, and utility rate caps. We hold our MeetUp at Tritone, a bar located at 1515 South Street. Tritone has a full dinner menu and is easy to access for people with disabilities with a ramp, instead of stairs, at the entrance.

Last January, 65,000 volunteers served in some 900 projects in the 14th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the nation. Since 1996, some 500,000 volunteers across our region have celebrated Dr. King’s legacy by turning their community concerns into volunteer service and ongoing citizen action on King Day and beyond. Friend of DL Philly and former Philly resident Ali Eteraz has written Children of Dust, a memoir "revealing Islamic fundamentalism and madrassa life in rural Pakistan, the culture shock of moving to the U.S., and a journey of reconciliation to the modern Middle East." On Tuesday night at 6, the Council for the Advancement of Muslim Professionals will host Ali's author appearance at the Brandywine Workshop, 730 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19146. Center City DL meets from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. every Tuesday in the Triumph Brewing Co. upstairs bar, located at 117 Chestnut St. (between Front and 2nd Streets), Philadelphia, PA 19106. There are $3 beers, $4 wine, $5 well drinks all night as well as happy hour food specials including half-price burgers.

Triumph Brewery is conveniently SEPTA-accessible via the Market-Frankford El (2nd Street station), all the buses that turn around at or near Penn's Landing (12, 17, 21, 33, 42, 48), and a few other buses that pass nearby (5, 25, 47, 57). Driving directions are here.

Trader Joe's Ongoing Nutrition Mislabeling Problem

Two otherwise identical packages of a product available at Trader Joe's in Center City Philadelphia:

Based on comparison to similar products, I believe the label with the higher calories is correct. This is not the first time I have encountered this problem with Trader Joe's brand items. It's happened to others, too. If you shop there and read labels, watch out.

It's the Eagles v. Dallas in Sunday night football. DL Center City regulars been having a good time watching the Eagles on Sunday afternoons; this will be the first evening game. Come out and be liberal football fans with us in the upstairs bar at Jose Pistola's, 263 S. 15th Street (between Locust and Spruce), Philadelphia, PA 19102. We'll start around 8:00 p.m., kickoff is at 8:20 p.m.

At the meetup, proud progressive State Rep of North/Northeast Philly's 202nd District Mark Cohen will discuss House Bill 1393, which would legalize medical marijuana in Pennsylvania.
