The big drugstore chains in Philadelphia are CVS and RiteAid, but recently Walgreens has been pushing into the market. I stopped into one of the newer ones on South St. tonight and discovered it has no pharmacy. Is this an innovation that I missed? A quick check of the respective websites shows that this is the only pharmacy-less branch of a major drugstore chain in the immediate area. (I also just noticed that CVS and RiteAid both feature the word "pharmacy" as part of their name on their homepages, but Walgreens does not, although their site's favicon is a little mortar and pestle.) They had next to no cold and flu remedies, either, but they had a whole aisle of groceries. It was basically a convenience store with the Walgreens name on the door. Weird.
That Walgreens had a pharmacy when the store opened, but they didn't keep it for long. Maybe they never really had any intention to keep a pharmacy there.
