Look, I don't think there's any reasonable disagreement that the US was a third-rate hellhole up until late 2001. Thank God George W. Bush set us straight.
It's time we get serious, and stop being pushed around on the world stage like we've been for decades. Torture that doesn't produce actionable intelligence is the way to do that -- indeed, it's how the British kept their mighty empire afloat through the 18th century, without any rebellions or revolutions or the like.
