Americans eligible for tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 under the new fiscal stimulus act will not receive their payments until they file a 2007 income tax return, even if they make too little to owe any taxes, the Internal Revenue Service said on Wednesday.
What possible justification can there be for this?
How would the government know to whom to send the rebate checks without the people filing their taxes? Do you know if I moved since I filed my 2006 taxes? How do you know if a taxpayer has died? If I made an "eligible" amount in 2006, but had a huge increase for 2007, and was suddenly not eligible, how would the government know that?
