It's 2003. Some teenagers are having a party, and as teens today are wont, they are smoking pot, drinking, and fucking.
One of the attendees at the party was a 17-year-old boy. Another was a 15-year-old girl. A third was someone with a video camera.
Caught on video was much sexual activity, including the boy getting head from the girl. Curiously, at the time, a 17-year-old person having oral sex with a 15-year-old person was aggravated child molestation. Fucking crazy.
So, off the 17-year-old goes to jail. For 10 years, statutory minimum. Ever fucking crazier.
But wait!
In 2006, subsequent to the "crime", the law was changed to make the conduct a misdemeanor. At most, a year in jail.
The kid has done 27 months already. So they're going to let him out, right?
Nope. Oh, I'm sorry, were you assuming he was white? No, he's the criminal color. Here's a pic of Genarlow Wilson at 17:
He's described as:
In 2003, Wilson was an honors student, standout athlete and homecoming king preparing for his SATs with an eye toward college.
True, but he's black, so he was born for jail. So sayeth the assistant attorney general on the case, one Paula Smith.
The Georgia State Legislature is trying to pass a bill to free Wilson. But it's blocked by a top Republican (did you even need to be told?) senator, Eric Johnson:
It's too bad I don't live in Sen. Johnson's district, so I could stand on the motherfucker's desk myself. But anybody who does live down that way should be kicking his door in - in a very polite manner - to express themselves on the topic.
Or you can write to Sen. Johnson.
Or you can contact the Attorney General's office.
Or you can donate to the Genarlow Wilson Legal Defense Fund.
