One thing about Bush; he makes past Republican administrations look good. Lindsay at Majikthise posted this report about a politico at the Department of Fish and Wildlife who rides roughshod over the career staff, people like the biologists who understand the environmental issues and the attorneys who know what's legal and what's not, to further administration goals. Do I need to say that protecting fish and wildlife are not the administration's goals so much as protecting its business cronies? If this reminds you of something, it may be the way politicians have taken over the Civil Rights Division at Justice, or maybe the way NASA tried to silence one of its scientists about global warming. US Attorneys, enough said. Apparently, they're at it over at the FDA also.
This is all part of Bush's worldview, the one in which the Constitution is just a "goaddamned piece of paper." These agencies were created by Congress to enforce the laws written by Congress. Thie executive agencies because the Constitution requires that the President "take care that the laws be faithfully executed." In any administration, some laws are more equal than others, that's just politics. But, as I said the other day, this goes beyond that. It's one thing to not-so-vigorously enforce a law unpopular with your constituency, it's another thing to put in place political appointees who will not only ignore the law entirely but also do the exact opposite of what that law requires. Part of the blame for this goes to Congress, the Republican-controlled Congress, who confirmed these losers.
I've read some statements that Congress needs to stop investigating this administration, that it's just a "vendetta" and will make the Dems look bad. Our entire system of government is being decimated by a madman who consistently derogates the oath he took to adhere to the Constitution. This is not nickel-and-dime stuff, this is not diddling the interns, this is serious shit. This is the Constitution. When Americans talk about "freedom," that's what they're talking about. This can go two ways; the backlash against Bush's horrifying abuses can usher in a new era of recognition for the system of government the Constitution put in place, or Bush will be the end of that system. Congress damn well better investigate.
Howdy Mithras,
I just loved your last paragraph in "We don't need no stinkin' constitution." It succinctly slashed down that stupid Time editorial slant that resulted in this week's edition having not a single mention of the US-A firings. Incredible. Anyway really well written, thanks.
BTW, the "Matrix Ping Pong" link is broken, at least that's what I thought it said in Polish.

cd-
Thanks, but this was Aquagirl's post.
And the broken links on the sidebar are now sort of part of the scenery (i.e., I am too lazy to remove or fix them).
Thanks again.
