This article about the evisceration and abuse of the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ is deeply disturbing. Living in the DC area, I think I have a pretty good grasp of how different administrations affect different agencies. It's going to be lean times if you work for, say, the Department of Labor, during a Republican administration. Priorities vary. This goes way, way beyond that. One startling example: the Civil Rights Division is charged with protecting the voting rights of minorities. As part of those duties, it "pre-clears" (or not) proposed voting laws. Georgia came in for pre-clearance of a law requiring government-issued identification to vote. Career staff recommended against pre-clearing the law, given its effect on minority voters. The political appointees realized that the most common form of government id is the driver's license; people without driver's licenses are people without cars, poor people. Poor people don't vote Republican, so the political appointees not only overrode the career staff's recommendation, they barred them from offering any more recommendations.
