Out in the frozen tundra of the near western suburbs once again, babysitting this time (yes, people trust me with their child - amazing, I know), watching first my mom's alma mater win and then Jeff Goldblum's new NBC detective series, Raines, which, as I say, is much like the Fox series House. (Okay, from that link, I learn that House is "critically acclaimed", to which I say, shoot me now, and if you agree with the acclaim, shoot yourself next.)
Raines is sarcastic and obnoxious. House is sarcastic and obnoxious. Raines is brilliant; House is brilliant. Neither waste an opportunity to remind people of it. Both are troubled. Raines sees dead people. House takes pills. Their afflictions are destined to get them into trouble, professionally and personally.
The differences are as follows: Raines has none of the annoying special effects that plague House. Raines does have snappy Goldblumish dialog, sort of the guy in Independence Day with a gun. Whether it has a prayer of being a success, I doubt. But then again, I think House sucks, so what do I know?
