My friend's death in February motivated me to get crackin' on things I had planned to do but hadn't managed to get around to up until now. One of those things is going to happen in about two weeks: I will fly to Seattle, rent a convertible, and drive the 1,200 miles or so of the Pacific Coast Highway to San Diego. (The north-to-south route is preferred for a simple reason - it puts the car on the outside lane, so the view is better.)
Right now my itinerary is Seattle, Portland, redwoods, San Francisco, Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Monica, and San Diego. I have never been to the northwest, so Seattle and Portland will be interesting. (Also, Seattle is one of those places I have considered moving, so I am checking it out for that potential, too.) I have never been north of the wine country in California, in fact. There are some interesting possibilities for side trips, too, but my main goal is just to drive every mile of the PCH in daylight. Photos and blogging will happen, I think.
now that sounds like an awesome trip. never been to the west coast before myself.

If you've not been, definitely stop at Hearst Castle. My partner and I drove up the coast from LA to San Francisco, and that was my very favorite part of California. The central coast is lovely.
Also, if you're into bookstores, and you haven't been to Ferlinghetti's bookstore in SF (the name escapes me right at the moment), it's worth a look-see. Famous, full of good books.

I second the aquarium. Monterey's one of the few places out west I've been, and it's a great part of the country.

Mithras, that sounds like a wonderful idea for a trip. I haven't been to California since I was seven years old. LBJ was president back then. I'm guessing things have changed a little bit since then.
A friend of mine also recommends the visit to Hearst Castle.
