Ali Eteraz Book Channel Author Appearance Tuesday Night for Children of Dust
Friend of DL Philly and former Philly resident Ali Eteraz has written Children of Dust, a memoir "revealing Islamic fundamentalism and madrassa life in rural Pakistan, the culture shock of moving to the U.S., and a journey of reconciliation to the modern Middle East." On Tuesday night at 6, the Council for the Advancement of Muslim Professionals will host Ali's author appearance at the Brandywine Workshop, 730 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19146. The appearance will be broadcast on C-Span's Book Channel. Some copies of the book will be available for sale at the appearance. RSVP here.

Trader Joe's Ongoing Nutrition Mislabeling Problem

Based on comparison to similar products, I believe the label with the higher calories is correct. This is not the first time I have encountered this problem with Trader Joe's brand items. It's happened to others, too. If you shop there and read labels, watch out.

It's almost halfway through the regular season already, so come out to catch some football with Drinking Liberally Philly. The Eagles play on Monday night this week, so this Sunday we'll be watching the Steelers take on the Vikings instead. We'll be in the upstairs bar at Jose Pistola's, 263 S. 15th Street (between Locust and Spruce), Philadelphia, PA 19102. We'll start around 12:30, kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.

Picnic for the Public Option in Clark Park
President Obama needs our help in getting a strong Health Care Reform Bill through congress. We can help him by showing our support, enjoy a wonderful Philadelphia park, and catch up with old friends from the campaign all at the same time. The picnic will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in Clark Park in West Philly.

The picnic will be potluck like so many of our events during the primaries. Alcohol is not permitted in the park. In case of rain we will move the event to the Millcreek Tavern, 4200 Chester Ave and regardless we will probably head there after the picnic. RSVP here.

This week at DL we're having a joint party with the American Constitution Society's local lawyers and law student chapters. Adam Bonin of ACS will give a short talk on the Citizens United case before the Supreme Court, which is widely expected to result in corporations being granted Free Speech rights to make political contributions.

Time to Deliver Health Care 100,000 Call Challenge
The health reform debate is about to move to the full Congress for the first time. With the insurance industry lobby pulling out all the stops to derail progress, we need everyone who supports reform to weigh in. So here's the plan: Set a new OFA record by getting 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on a single day.

On Tuesday, October 20, volunteers from all over Philadelphia will gather to participate in this record-breaking effort by calling constituents and asking them to call on their member of Congress to support reform. President Obama will join the event via live webcast, sharing the latest info on the fight for reform and encouraging everyone to keep up the fight.

Ali Eteraz at the Free Library
An international lawyer (and former Drinking Liberally Philly attendee) who founded a think tank dedicated to legal reform in the Muslim world, Ali Eteraz writes an award-winning blog on the site Islamosphere. In Children of Dust, Eteraz recounts his schooling in a madrassa in Pakistan, his move to America, and his subsequent return to find a Muslim wife, at which time he becomes the subject of an abduction plot by the Taliban and is forced to grapple with his Islamic identity. Called a "love letter to one man's fading faith," author Yael Goldstein Love insists that the memoir "is a gift and a necessity."

My view is that Pakistan gets a very bad rap in American press. The fact that suicide bombings occur there should not be an indictment of average Pakistanis who are really rambunctious and party-loving people. The country is currently in the midst of an awesome musical, artistic and literary renaissance — much of it in response to the turmoil — and more Americans should pay attention to that side of Pakistan. I know that people in Philly appreciate rock music — they would be surprised to know that Pakistan is at the forefront of Third-World rock.

Drinking Liberally Philly: Petition Anheuser-Busch to Leave the U.S. Chamber of Commerce
We like to share a drink as we share our politics.  But it turns out the makers of Budweiser aren't so concerned about sharing the planet.  They're part of an organization that denies global warming -- pitting the King of Beers against Mother Earth. Anheuser-Busch sits on the board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- an organization that has taken a radical stand on global warming and has threatened to sue the EPA if it tries to regulate greenhouse gases.

Bud and Bud Lite are supposed to lift our spirits; why would they want to hurt our planet?

That's why Drinking Liberally wants to let them know that we like the "King of Beers," but we like Mother Earth even more.

Join us in asking Anheuser-Busch to step down from the board of the Chamber of Commerce, and show us where their loyalties truly are -- with us, their customers.

Other major companies including Apple and Pacific Gas and Electric have already stepped down. If Anheuser-Busch stands up for our environment, we'll raise up a glass to them, and say, "This Bud's for you."

A sukkah is a temporary 'booth' which Jews build to celebrate the harvest festival of Sukkot, which runs through this Saturday night. And, since it's a mitzvah (commandment) to eat + drink in the sukkah, combined w/another commandment to welcome guests into one's house, what better than to invite friends over for beer in the sukkah.

After Drinking Liberally Center City, head over to Bob & Barbara's for "the special" and open-mic storytelling. Oral storytelling is one of the greatest and earliest gifts betrothed to our species. The second the earliest cavemen learned to talk, they started relating their experiences. "Man, did I ever tell you about that fucked up mammoth hunt when Og almost fell on his spear?"

Even with the countless communication outlets afforded to us today, modern society has fostered a sense of isolation. You might have a whole lot in common with that person sitting on the bar stool next to you, but unless you're in his Tweeter circle or visit his blog, you'll never know. We want to create a venue that provides a sense of community and allows everyone to share their lives in a physical, personal way. If we could build a camp fire in Bob and Barbaras, we would.

Obama Food Politics

I've actually had pizza from this place:

At the bustling Pi pizza restaurant in St. Louis, the staff has come up with a new mantra: "It's just pizza!"

Just pizza, and yet still, they marvel, customers are happy to wait well upward of two hours at peak time for a table. That is, ever since news came out that Barack Obama loved this pizza so much during a campaign stop, the owners were invited to recreate it in the White House ovens.

"We tell them it'll be two to four hours, and they say, OK!" says owner Chris Sommers, who traveled on his own dime to prepare the presidential meal in April. "This has been our own private stimulus package."

It was okay, but not great. Tastes differ, but there are also great political reasons for a politician trying to win in Missouri to say it offers one of his favorite dishes.

Also, we'll be keeping an eye out for whether Obama announces his nominee for the Supreme Court. The word is that the announcement will be next week, but long-shot candidate Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm is visiting the White House tomorrow, so there may be a surprise.

PZ Myers Lecture: "The Complicated Truth About Haeckel's Embryos"
PZ Myers, an associate professor of biology at the University of Minnesota Morris who is best known for his popular science blog Pharyngula, will speak at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. His talk, titled "The Complicated Truth About Haeckel's Embryos", will present a history of embryology that reveals how scientists have integrated the theory of evolution with development. He will also address how the ideas have been grossly distorted by creationists to create an illusion of contradiction. The focus of this talk is on the philosophy of science and how theory informs observation/experiment and vice versa. Hosted by the University of Delaware Secular Student Alliance.
