Bomb squads often blow up suspicious objects, which is what I assumed they did. Maybe they just cut into the soles to see if there was anything hidden in the heels. <p>I'd also bet that some of the shoe pieces have survived and are in the personal collections of the investigators. "hey honey, look what I brought home from work!"</p>
